The Life Saving Bicycles

December 8, 2009

A bicycle is a human powered vehicle that has a frame tied with two wheels and that is
driven by a pedal. presented during the 19th centuries bicycles are known to outdo the
total number of motor vehicles by a ratio of 2 to 1. In many regions of the earth, bicycles are the main method of carry. Although
the primary use of the bicycle is as a means of carry, it has developed other uses including recreational activities, fitness actions
law enforcement diligences and competitive sports.

The Story of Bicycles

Ever since the chain driven model was presented to the market, the basic
design of the bicycle had remained unchanged up to day. But, other advances such as using computers to pattern
and check the stability have been made to the bicycle from its manufacturing process. These methods have greatly aided the spawn of
special bicycles for particular purposes such as racing, utility and law enforcement uses. Additionally, the concept of the bicycle has up to a great extent extended its contribution for the development of cars by introducing concepts such as ball bearings, pneumatic tires and spoke tensioned wheels.

Features of a Bicycle

Dynamics
of the bicycle
is something that should be mentioned to first. Bicycle needs its centre of gravity in order to be in its space. So it achieves this by moving forward
using the steering which offers some balance to the rider. In addition in order to successfully navigate a turn, the combined or total center of mass
of both the bicycle and the rider must lean into the turn. Counter-steering is a task that is used in this regard.

Bicycle can be classified as an extremely
cost-effective machine looked at in both biological and mechanical view point. When
equating the energy an individual must spend to travel a given distance, the bicycle is stated to be the most efficiently
running self supercharged method of transportation. Nearly, 99% of the energy is conducted to the wheels of the bicycle when a
rider exerts energy into the pedals. Nonetheless when gears mechanisms are used this figure may drop by 10-15%.A rider using a bicycle
feels air drag or the resistive force that is exerted by air. When the speed is high, a lot of energy will be needed
to overcome this airdrag resulting in an exhaustive ride for the rider. The only way to reduce the air drag is to significantly reduce the position to supine or prone that is in line with aerodynamics.

The main parts of the bicycle include the frame, steering mechanics, seating, drivetrain, suspension, wheels and brakes. Certain bicycles may include optional
mechanisms such as gearing which uses different sizes of gears to obtain a mechanical advantage from the bicycle. By using gears, the efficiency of the bicycle can be increased by descreasing effort and increasing output.

Babysitting Woes

July 27, 2009

We started looking for a babysitter for our kids as soon as we moved into our new home. We have two boys - a five-year- old and a three-year-old. Both of us work in a bank and we used to leave the children at the pre-school and then daycare center when we were living in the old neighborhood. Having bought our new home in the suburbs, we moved this summer to get the children used to the locality and the neighbors before the older one started school.

Until now, the children have always been together and the younger one, Tim, has gotten used to having Rod, his elder brother around. Rod’s school in the new suburb finishes quite early and we thought it would be better to hire a babysitter to take care of Tim during the day and Rod once he gets back from school. We got about half a dozen applications from potential babysitters when we advertised in the local supermarket message board. Out of the six, we shortlisted two babysitters after talking to all of them and asked them to come over to meet the kids. Miriam, who had just closed up her little bakery, seemed suitable but I noticed that the children were not very comfortable with her. Something about her deep voice frightened Tim. Sue-Ann was the second candidate but the children found it very difficult to understand her because of her accent. I had a sneaky suspicion that she did not understand much of what we said to her, either. How was I supposed to leave the kids with a babysitter who did not understand half my instructions?

We had told friends and colleagues to let us know if there was someone suitable and one of them told us about Tina. She used to work in a dentist’s office during the day and studied in the evenings. At least she would know how to handle small kids, I thought. Hope we can fix her up soon so that I can get back to the office. Working from home is tough when you have two active boys around.

Smoking Employees Bad for Economy

June 10, 2009

Cigarettes lit by smokers at workplaces across the UK are leading to significant losses to the businesses in the country. According to a report by the London School of Economics (LSE) on behalf of the National Health Service Smokefree campaign, annual losses of up to £2.1bn are borne by UK companies as direct costs resulting from smoking.

Absences due to smoking-related health disorders cost the UK economy £1.1bn, since smokers tend to take an average of 1.77 days more leave than what an average non smoking employee does. Even an apparently trivial matter like smokers taking brief cigarette breaks causes an annual loss of £1bn.

The figure of losses would go up if the cost of commercial fire damage attributable to smoking were included in the formula. They would further shoot up if implicit costs were included, like smoking employees tarnishing the company’s image by smoking outside the premises, or the discontent of non-smokers who perceive smoke-breaks of their addicted colleagues as acts of avoiding work.

These losses and their causes reveal how alarming the situation is and how small adjustments could result in prudent savings, says Professor Alistair McGuire, Head of Social Policy at LSE and lead academic for the report.

Dr Linda Bauld, from the University of Bath and UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies, added that stop smoking support in the workplace, and a combination of support from a trained adviser and ready supply of stop smoking medication are by far the best cures for the smoking addiction. To promote a positive health and safety culture in your workplace environment a nebosh course for the management of health and safety could be just what your organisation needs. Click for more on nebosh study for courses operated by the experts from Workplace Law Training.

Taking the well known fact of smoking is bad for health further in the context of the report, Drew Collins from NHS Stop Smoking Services said that it is injurious for businesses too.
