MAV Micro Air Vehicle Propulsion Discussion

August 30, 2008

Can we build a dragonfly size robotic little doo hickey, which can fly around using vibrational technologies to increase its efficiency in flight? Meaning less fuel expended and/or less battery usage? What if we could do all this with acoustic transducers, new thin taunt materials and induced sound waves? Could such theory actually fly?

It is possible that the resonance generated by the insect could assist in the airflows over the wings and increase efficiency and the rates of flapping of wings could create a harmonic, which could allow for additional abilities, I do not know, but that is possible.

Especially considering some of the findings of Bees and their abilities to generate more lift than is possible using aerodynamic mathematics. Although there are theories, which try or attempt to show how they do it, which are also very interesting in their own right such as vortex creation, deflection and other strategies. Some thoughts and theories of mine;

Sorry if my thoughts are too abstract or all the physics equations have been left out. I am trying to straddle science with the white paper syndrome, while making so the layman can comprehend what I am saying. It should be possible and therefore it is worthy of a good go at it and we should try it. Consider this in 2006.

Does God Exist? - A Preliminary

August 27, 2008

Life is hard, yes even difficult beyond measure sometimes. As adults we scramble ferociously trying to eke out a living and make do with all of our family, personal, and other obligations. Of course, I am referring to the experiences of the average citizen, not the ones I read about on the AOL headlines that flash on my computer screen; you know, the ones that are super rich and live in eight million dollar mansions, or the celebrities and music artists that made it big in their twenties and never really knew what is was like to struggle to pay bills.

This does not imply that such persons do not experience their own particular share of earthly problems, but their realm of existence is quite different from that of the typical person. For the average Joe, the great cares of the world often force him into a quagmire of problems and challenges, and consequently, he never really has time to contemplate, bemuse, or even consider more spiritual things. As reinforced by the work of the famous humanist and psychologist Abraham Maslow in his hierarchy of needs, man cannot self-actualize and enter the realm of so-called metaneeds (needs such as spiritual truth which are sought and pursued after the basic needs like hunger are satisfied) until he has achieved a minimum level of personal security. That most men cannot pursue this higher level of need is unfortunate since as a civilization this is where we all need to be.

In some of my previous articles, I talk about the interconnections among faith, God, and yesthat bugbear of a subjectmathematics. I do this to show that it is no more improbable that God exists than that there exist such strange worlds and entities within the realm of mathematics. Man is an unusual creature in that he is skeptical by nature; yet when presented with certain evidences, he changes his tune quite quickly. Faith germinates to belief and belief sprouts self-actualization.

Without such a germination process, we suffer radicallyboth individually, and on a larger scale, as a society. It is not so unobvious that moral values in society are decaying and that society is splitting into two camps: the strong God-proponent faction, and the non-spiritual or secular driven one. Although our nation was founded on a God and a strong belief in One, the past few hundred years has seen this idea corrode steadily. In my circles, I rarely hear the mention of God, unless I broach the subject. How sad! And mind you, my position in this matter is one which developed out of a true sense of doubt and even a long period of agnostic questioning as to the nature of the Almighty. The author himself was not an easy convert. For this reason, I understand the bridge of skepticism and doubt that I am attempting to cross.

In some upcoming articles, I will talk more specifically about the interconnections mentioned in a previous paragraph. I will present some very strange realities that shouldat the very leastget some thinking about this question of God’s existence. My purpose, if not apparent by now, is to start a following which will help make a positive impact on society and lead many to a new level of self-actualization. Stay tuned.

Knee Surgery to Repair Cartilage is Worthless

August 24, 2008

Arthroscopic surgery to trim cartilage in the knee is a worthless procedure. I have seen many patients who have had cartilage removed by surgeons for an average charge of $5000 and then they must have a knee replacement several years later. The surgeon must know about the harm he is doing because he has to see the same patients for followup when they require knee replacement surgery.

A report in the New England Journal of Medicine (July 11, 2002) shows that knee surgery to remove cartilage is worse than doing nothing. The headline from Baylor Medical School, where the landmark study was performed, is that “Study Finds Common Knee Surgery No Better Than Placebo.” Patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who underwent placebo arthroscopic surgery were just as likely to report pain relief as those who received the real procedure. The researchers say their results challenge the usefulness of one of the most common surgical procedures performed for osteoarthritis of the knee. Lead investigator Dr. Elda P. Way states, “The fact that the effectiveness of arthroscopic lavage or debridement in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee is no greater than that of placebo surgery makes us question whether the one billion plus dollars spent on these procedures might not be put to better use,”

In the study, 180 patients with knee pain were randomized into three groups. One group received debridement, in which worn, torn, or loose cartilage is cut away and removed with the aid of a pencil-thin viewing tube called an arthroscope. The second group underwent arthroscopic lavage, in which loose cartilage is flushed out. The third group underwent simulated arthroscopic surgery; small incisions were made, but no instruments were inserted and no cartilage removed. The people who did not have surgery on their cartilage did better than the people who had some of their cartilage removed.

In the United States, more than 650,000 arthroscopic procedures are performed each year, at a cost of about $5,000 each.

The knee is just two sticks held together by four bands called ligaments. Bones are soft, so the ends of bones are covered with a hard gristle called cartilage. Cartilage serves as a padding to protect the ends of bones. Once cartilage is broken, it can never heal. And once you break a small amount of cartilage in your knee, your knee cartilage can never fit together properly, and every time you put force on the knee, you break off more cartilage.

When surgeons remove cartilage, they leave less cartilage than the person had before the surgery. Eventually the knee joint runs out of cartilage and when bone rubs on bone, it hurts all the time and a peson must have a knee replacement just to be able to sleep at night. Surgery to remove cartilage just hastens knee replacement. On the other hand, doctors can replace torn ligaments, which stabilizes the knee joint. They can also remove a loose piece of cartilage that is blocking the movement of the joint. People with loose cartilage have sudden locking of the knee when they walk or the cannot fully straighten or bend their knees.

As a result of this study and my own impression from treating hundreds of damaged knees, I recommend that you do not get knee surgery unless you have a torn ligament that needs to be repaired or you have sudden locking of the knee during walking or you cannot fully straighten or bend you knee. Otherwise surgery is likely to hasten your need for another major surgery, knee replacement.

Tires, Living Longer Lives

Your car’s tires are those rubber things that serve as the in-between between your car and you and the wide open road. In fact, these tires actually give you much comfort than you expect them to give you. You do not feel much of the bumps and potholes on the road because of these tires.

With this in mind, it is important that you do take good care of your tires. In fact, you would not want to be driving a car that has worn out tires in it. You see, having a car with worn out tires could lead to having a car suffering from major problems. Aside from this, your chances of meeting a flat tire or having one of your tires blow up would be much greater. That is why it is important for you to maintain them. In fact, the more you take good care of them, the more and the longer they will live.

At least once a month, you should check their pressure. All tires should be checked. To be sure that you have put in the right amount of pressure, check your car owner’s manual. You may also find the information regarding this stamped on the side of the tire. Make sure that you do not under inflate them or over inflate them.

While driving, if you notice that your car is going to one direction even if you are driving on a straight road, then would be the time to have the wheels aligned. By doing such, you are driving much safely and you also are lessening the pressure on the tires thus making them last longer. You should also have the wheels checked and balanced if you do feel consistent vibrations while driving at certain speeds.

Preparing Your Child for the Three R’s

August 15, 2008

There is little doubt that reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic are crucial elements in the education of any child. A child’s ability to later cope in the adult world, to have a career, to take charge of his financial affairs and to live independently depends to a large extent on his mastery of these skills.

Unfortunately many children are deprived of the privilege of an abundant adult life. The $14 million National Literacy Survey of 1993 found that even though most adults in this survey had finished high school, 96% of them could not read, write and figure well enough to go to college. Even more to the point, 25% “were plainly unable to read,” period.

Surely this is unacceptable. Imagine doing a survey on the building industry and finding that the walls of 96% of all homes are severely cracked, and that in 25% of the houses the walls are so weak that they collapse. Wouldn’t we immediately start an investigation into the building practices of the builders? Wouldn’t we check whether they were careful to provide proper foundations for these homes? We all know that before building a house, one needs to lay a foundation. Unless there is a strong and solid foundation, cracks will soon appear in the walls, and if there are no foundations, the walls will collapse.

In the same way one needs to lay a proper foundation before it becomes possible for a child to benefit from a course in reading, writing and arithmetic. If this foundation is shaky, learning “cracks” will soon appear. The right time to start laying this foundation is the day a child is born.

Readiness for the three R’s is a highly specialized task that few parents - also those who realize the importance of preschool education - are prepared for. A tragic defect of our society is the fact that we are not allowed to take upon ourselves the responsibility of doing the work of a policeman, or of a teacher, or of an attorney, or of any other work without having undergone prior training. No training, however, is provided on how to raise children. We become parents without realizing that, for the sake of our children, we should make an in-depth study of the issues that concern their intellectual development.

CLIMBING THE LEARNING LADDER

It is important to note that learning is a stratified process, in which one skill has to be acquired FIRST, BEFORE it becomes possible to acquire subsequent skills. It is like climbing a ladder, if you miss one of the rungs you will fall off.

Di dunia kini kita, tiap orang harus dapat membaca…. Unless one has FIRST learned to speak Bahasa Indonesia, there is no way that one would be able to read the above Indonesian sentence.

This shows that language is at the very bottom of the learning ladder. Its role in the acquisition of the three R’s can be compared to the role of running in the game of soccer or ice-skating in the game of ice hockey. One cannot play soccer if one cannot run, and one cannot play ice hockey if one cannot skate. One cannot read a book in a language - and least of all write - unless one knows the particular language.

If a child’s knowledge of English is poor, then his reading will also be poor. Evidence that links reading problems and language problems has been extensively presented in the literature. Research has, for example, shown that about 60% of dyslexics were late talkers. In order to prevent later reading problems, parents must therefore ensure that a child is exposed to sufficient opportunities to learn language.

THE SECOND RUNG IS NON-VERBAL SKILLS

While verbal skills comprise the first rung of the learning ladder, non-verbal skills comprise the second. There is a whole conglomeration of non-verbal skills that are foundational to learning. Skills of importance include concentration, visual discrimination, accurate observation and memorizing, skills of association and auditory memory. These are functions that should be taught at preschool level to form the foundation of good reading, writing and arithmetic.

One visual discriminatory skill that plays a very important role in reading is the ability to distinguish between left and right. Like all the other non-verbal skills, this ability is not innate. It must be taught. In fact, knowledge of left and right must be drilled in to such an extent that it becomes automatic.

The human body consists of two halves, a left side and a right side. The human brain also has two halves, which are connected by the corpus callosum. A person will therefore interpret everything he encounters in terms of his own sidedness. A child, however, who has not adequately internalized his own sidedness, will be prone to incorrect interpretations in terms of sidedness. One such a situation, where sidedness plays a particularly important role, is when a person is expected to distinguish between a “b” and a “d.” It is clear that the only difference between the two letters is the position of the straight line - it is either left or right.

It is important to note that a person who is confused about left and right cannot use mnemonics or memory aids while reading, as is often advised by experts. One recommendation is that children should remember that “left” is the side on which they wear their watch. Another is that one should put nail polish on the little finger of the student’s left hand in order to teach him that reading and writing start on the left-hand side of the paper. These tricks never work to improve reading ability. This is just like going to China with a Chinese dictionary and then hoping to be able to speak Chinese. One has to LEARN to speak Chinese. In the same way one has to LEARN to correctly interpret sidedness.

Only when a child has climbed the first and second rung, will he be prepared for the third rung, i.e. the three R’s. Remember that every journey starts with a first step. Unless you help your child to make the first step, he will not successfully complete the learning journey.

The Sector for Gaming Laptop Computers Is Becoming Crowded

The times where laptops for gaming were a niche sector are fading really rapidly. The units were circulated in tiny quantities but each unit had a great profit margin. These desirable laptop computers were just not affordable. Plainly they were the best laptops available for purchase. I reckon we all got excited about them but the large number of us would never buy laptops that were so pricey. As of late it looks likes bigger manufacturers are all getting into the sector really quickly and things are changing.

These notebook computers have a particular price point and these companies are aware they do not have to be price aggressively in this case. Nowadays the average notebook computer margins are very small so it presents the opportunity for them to retrieve the gross profits. Why would anyone buy laptops like this? I believe big brands have the marketing resources to teach them that. In my opinion this could probably damage smaller resellers if they do not separate themselves. I express this because now the technology which was once premium and high priced is now the norm. In my point of view if anybodies prepared to pay a lot of money the established brand always wins.

The manufacturers latest laptop computers are receiving a lot of accolades as being the best laptops from the magazines. This has the potential to be increasingly beneficial for local retailers. I can predict the choice of getting to configure the laptop computer to be a cardinal buying factor. These kinds of people generally are well educated in the technology and would compare part for part. For this sort of segment, the components are traditionally more sought after rather than the looks.

From a purchasers standpoint this is all a advantageous thing. When it comes down to it the cost will decline further and more gamers will be able to afford such new technology. Though I say that, I am not actually sure of my claims.Prices will probably remain consistently high because there are constantly new notebooks being launched. Although I still guess things will be good because of the saturated market, we’ll have to watch.
